Electroless nickel plating is a process of depositing a layer of nickel-phosphorus alloy onto a metal surface using a chemical reaction, without the use of an electrical current. The plating process involves immersing the metal part into an electroless nickel plating bath, which contains a solution of nickel salts, reducing agents, and stabilizers. The reducing agents cause the nickel ions in the solution to be reduced and deposited onto the metal surface, forming a uniform and controlled thickness coating.
SAE AMS-C-26074 specifies the requirements for electroless nickel coatings with low phosphorus content, typically between 1-5%. SAE AMS2402, on the other hand, covers electroless nickel coatings with high phosphorus content, typically between 10-14%.
Electroless nickel coatings are characterized by their excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and hardness. The properties of the coating can be tailored by adjusting the composition of the plating bath, including the concentration of nickel and phosphorus, the pH, temperature, and agitation of the solution.
The thickness of the electroless nickel coating can be controlled by adjusting the plating time and bath chemistry. The coating thickness can range from a few micrometers to several hundred micrometers, depending on the application requirements. The coating is typically specified in micrometers or mils.
Electroless nickel coatings have several advantages over traditional electroplating techniques, including the ability to coat complex geometries and achieve uniform thickness over the entire surface. The coatings can also provide a high degree of corrosion protection and have a low coefficient of friction, making them ideal for use in harsh environments, including aerospace, automotive, and electronic components.
Overall, electroless nickel plating provides a reliable and effective way to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of metal components, while also providing a uniform and aesthetically pleasing finish. The process can be customized to meet the specific needs of the application, providing a versatile and cost-effective solution for a wide range of industries.
